About the Catalogue

Most of the TUC Library acquired since it moved to London Metropolitan University in 1996 is on the University’s online catalogue. However, the majority of the Library accumulated beforehand (and approximately 75% overall), was recorded on a Card Catalogue consisting of approximately 120,000 cards.

The cards record serials, publications, monographs, pamphlets and books. Details include title, author, publisher, and date of publication. Each card has a category marked at the top on the left and in most cases the accompanying Library of Congress classmark on the top on the right (unless the category has no accompanying classmark or covers multiple classmarks.) In some cases the cards record single publications or multiple publications by a single author or publisher. The following is typical of a single publication card:

The TUC Library is the major research library for the study of all aspects of trade unions, collective bargaining and labour history, with both historical and contemporary coverage. It is part of the Special Collections at London Metropolitan University.
